Real Estate Photography vs Architectural Photography

10 June 2008

In reply to a couple of clients remarks, I wanted to differentiate 2 apparently similar (but not so) types of photography: Pure architectural Photography Vs. Real Estate photography.

Here is a quick comparison:

Architecture Photography Real Estate Photography
Pro Architectural photography is a speciality requiring years of hard studying, practice and talent for composition and graphics. Real Estate pro photography requires less knowledge, experience and skills in photography, but knowledge of other skills.
Creativity and Abstraction prevails Objectivity and Realism Prevail
The equipment used is most of the time medium to large format expensive and heavy cameras. We use Digital DSLRs
Time required to shoot ONE image requires anything from 3 hours to 3 weeks ! time to take one image is limited from 3 to 30 minutes max!
Time to post-process one image takes from 30 minutes to 3 hours. Time to post-process 30 seconds to 3 minutes !
For interior images, attention to details demand the use of complex and heavy lighting sets, assistants, art directors, decorators and such. We use lightweight Strobe flash and HDR/bracketing/ photoshop masking techniques instead of heavy lighting.
Therefore the cost for producing such work start in the 1000’€ upwards. Rates begins at 100 €
Delivery of final work can take up to a month. Final images must arrive within 72 hours.

When i mentioned about the Real Estate photographer needing "extra" skills, i implied that cost are so tight in Real Estate trade that whilst on site, we should be providing "added Value" to our clients.

Transportation being one major cost in pricing, it's a pity not to take advantage about it. That's why we at 3mille, offer not only still photography, but also panoramas, floor-plans, property data collection and copy-writing.

We even go further by providing the container for the documenting, in form of fully featured website, as well as high resolution pdf printable brochures.

Could we compare the real estate photographer as a "Jack of all trades and master of none" ? not quiet so. I'd rather say we're "Masters at being Jack of all Trades " !
